Are motions for a new trial ever granted?

Conventional wisdom says motions for new trial are rarely granted. In this case conventional wisdom is exactly right. Since early 2008, at least 245 motions for new trial were filed in patent cases. Although most of the motions were denied, in a few instances – less than 20 – the court agreed that a new trial was necessary. This list provides summaries of the orders granting new trials either in whole or in part.
